Tottenham Hotspur has failed to take the lead in the Premier League again. After a true spectacle – with five disallowed goals in total and two red cards for Spurs – Chelsea lost 1-4 at home in the London derby.

Dutch defender Micky van de Ven had to be substituted just before half time. During a sprint he shot his hamstring and that seems to be bad news for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers for the Dutch national team.

Due to Tottenham’s defeat, Manchester City, which recorded a 6-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, is the new leader in the Premier League. Chelsea rises to tenth place.

Tottenham Hotspur started the match furiously and took the lead after six minutes. Dejan Kulusevski came in and took a swing. The ball ended up in the goal via the back of Chelsea defender Levi Colwell (1-0).

Although Tottenham played with a lot of confidence, Chelsea had a big chance after 10 minutes. Nicolas Jackson’s effort was cleverly saved by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Moments later, Spurs appeared to double the score. After excellent combination play, Son Heung-min was able to tap in. But the goal was canceled due to offside.

Var works overtime

Chelsea then got into the game better and Raheem Sterling also managed to get the ball into the goal after a crumpled dribble. But the attacker had gotten the ball in his hand during his action, so this goal was also canceled.

Moments later, Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo scored from distance. This goal also did not count, because Jackson was in the path of the shot from an offside position. With the help of VAR working overtime, referee Michael Oliver saw a foul by Cristian Romero in that attack. The Tottenham defender received a red card and Chelsea a penalty. This was used by Cole Palmer: 1-1.

At this point the match had been going on for about half an hour.

Even before half time, the fourth goal of the match and Chelsea’s third was disallowed. Jackson tapped in after a cross from Sterling, but the latter was offside. Van de Ven suffered a hamstring injury in injury time.

No throttle back

Both teams certainly did not slow down in the second half. Tottenham Hotspur had to play with nine men ten minutes after the break, because Destiny Udogie received his second yellow card.

Chelsea logically had the better chances with two more men. Tottenham defended on one line and Chelsea lurked in the space behind the defense. Vicario, however, was excellent goalkeeper.

Only in the 75th minute did Chelsea manage to capitalize on the surplus situation. Sterling was sent into the depth and passed to Jackson, who tapped in.

Chances for Tottenham

Spurs showed resilience and even got the ball in the net again. Eric Dier fired the ball into the intersection after a free kick. But he was also in an offside position and so a goal was disallowed for the fifth time.

The equalizer also did not come after a great chance for Rodrigo Bentancur. A few meters from the goal line he could not get the ball into the goal. In injury time, Son took another dangerous shot, but he and his teammates could not get the ball in.

Chelsea succeeded in doing so shortly afterwards against their battle-weary opponent, and even twice. Jackson scored both goals in injury time to complete his hat trick.
