Although Spain won against Georgia in the European Championship qualifying on Sunday, the team is definitely not in a party mood. Top talent Gavi dropped out before halftime with an apparently serious injury. As a result, he may miss the European Championship.
Things went wrong for nineteen-year-old Gavi after just 26 minutes. The FC Barcelona midfielder grabbed his knee and had to be replaced with tears in his eyes. It became clear after the break that it was serious. Then teammate Ferran Torres showed Gavi’s shirt at the 2-1.
Torres, also a teammate of Gavi at FC Barcelona, knew enough when he saw Gavi’s tears. “I’ve known him for a while and know what kind of fighter he is,” he said. “I knew right away that it was serious because of how he left the field.”
There are fears of a serious knee injury, which will keep Gavi out for about nine months. This would mean that the youngster, who already has almost thirty international matches to his name, will miss the rest of the season at FC Barcelona and the European Championship.

‘It teaches us how vulnerable we are’
Spanish national coach Luis de la Fuente was also visibly upset. “It is a very difficult moment for him, his club, his teammates, me and the Spanish Football Federation. We are all devastated,” he said.
“This is the ugly part of football. No one takes into account that something like this happens to you until it happens. I am sad and it really hurts. It teaches us how vulnerable we are in our lives, but we also have to move on.”
Gavi is now back in Barcelona and has undergone several tests. His club is expected to provide an update on the injury later on Monday.
