Spain: Footballer Hermoso is to testify in court over the kissing scandal

In the investigation into the kissing scandal surrounding Luis Rubiales, the now resigned and suspended head of the Spanish Football Association RFEF, the judiciary has summoned world champion Jennifer Hermoso. The 33-year-old is scheduled to testify before the State Court in Madrid next Tuesday, the judiciary announced.

Hermoso was kissed on the mouth by Rubiales at the World Cup award ceremony on August 20th in Sydney, Australia, after winning the final against England. Although the then-federation boss continued to assert that Hermoso had consented to the kiss, the player said she felt “the victim of an impulsive, sexist and inappropriate act to which I did not consent.”

The responsible examining judge, Francisco de Jorge, has already interviewed numerous witnesses, including several players from the Spanish world champion team. He must decide whether Rubiales will be put in the dock. According to experts, the 46-year-old faces a prison sentence of up to four years in this case. Because of his aggressive behavior, Rubiales was banned for three years by the world association FIFA at the end of October. This applies to all football activities at national and international level. The Spanish sports court also banned him for three years.
