National midfielder Tomáš Souček scored a goal in the 89th minute to give West Ham players a 1:0 win on the field of the Serbian team Bačka Topola. The “Hammers” secured their place in the Europa League playoffs. In the last round, they will compete for the first place in Group A in a direct battle with Freiburg, who today outclassed Olympiakos Piraeus 5:0.
The winners of the groups will go directly to the round of 16, the second group will face the 1st round of the playoffs. The teams in third place will continue in the knockout phase of the Conference League.
In the 89th minute, Souček ran to the back post on Cornet’s cross and sent the ball into the net from close range. He once again confirmed that, even from the position of central midfielder, he is the team’s leading scorer in recent matches. The national team captain scored for the first time for West Ham three times in a row, in all cases he also ensured his team a victory in the end.
Souček made his mark in the league against Burnley (2:1) and Nottingham (3:2). Before that, he also scored in two matches for the national team, making it a total of five matches in a row. West Ham, whose nomination today lacked defender Vladimír Coufal, needs a draw at home against Freiburg in two weeks to maintain first place.
The German team confirmed their progress with an unequivocal triumph over Olympiakos, against whom they scored four goals already in the opening act. Gregoritsch flashed a hat-trick, who opened the scoring in the third minute with a quick finish in the box, and in the eighth and 36th minute he headed home. At the same time, the Austrian striker did not make a single appearance for the club in the previous 14 competitive matches of the season.
