The end of Martina Voss-Tecklenburg as national coach is sealed. On Saturday, the DFB announced the separation from the 55-year-old. The end was only a matter of time. The discontent after the World Cup exit was too great among the women’s soccer players, who had distanced themselves from their coach.
It was two days ago that Sparkasse Gütersloh-Rietberg-Versmold announced in a brief press release that Martina Voss-Tecklenburg would not be a speaker at the Sparkasse discussion next Tuesday. A reason for the cancellation was not given.
It may have already become apparent behind the scenes that there will be a drastic change at Voss-Tecklenburg, who was appointed national coach of the women’s national soccer team on April 26th. And this became public on Saturday afternoon: The German Football Association (DFB) announced the separation from Voss-Tecklenburg. The 55-year-old’s original contract ran until 2025 – and was only extended before the World Cup in the summer, from which the German women were surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary round.
A statement from the DFB said: “The DFB and national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will end their collaboration with immediate effect. This is the result of a joint meeting last Friday, which was approved by the shareholders’ meeting and the supervisory board of DFB GmbH & Co KG in a meeting this Saturday.”
“Team needs a new sporting start”
“On behalf of the DFB and also personally, I would like to thank Martina Voss-Tecklenburg for her cooperation over the past few years. During this time, important impulses were given in the area of women’s football. The national team’s entry into the final of the 2022 European Championships in England has given women’s and girls’ football an enormous boost. This success is and remains linked to Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. We wish Martina Voss-Tecklenburg all the best personally and sportingly,” Bernd Neuendorf, the DFB President, was quoted as saying.

The message also mentions a conversation that took place on Friday “in a trusting atmosphere”. “After a detailed analysis of the disappointing performance of the women’s national team at the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, there was agreement that the team needed a fresh start in terms of sporting leadership,” it continued.
Restlessness after speaking appearances
The end of Voss-Tecklenburg had become apparent in the past few weeks – weeks in which the national coach was first on sick leave and then, during a vacation, at the “Forum Intelligent Building” in Bremen about “team building and coaching from the world of sports” and then spoke about “Change Management in Women’s Football” at the Bavarian Dentists’ Day in Munich. Although this was approved by her employer, it was not well received as there had been no reappraisal of the sporting disaster since the World Cup – and no discussion with the players either.

“It gives me a few question marks, of course. I would definitely have wished for something different. That you say: OK, let’s first clarify what happened at the World Cup,” said midfielder Lena Oberdorf. None of the players have publicly advocated for the national coach to return.
Hrubesch should ensure Olympic qualification
The DFB finally reacted to Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s absence due to illness and on October 7th entrusted Horst Hrubesch with the management of the women’s national team as an interim solution.
He should ensure the desired qualification for the 2024 Olympics. The European teams can only secure the two places intended for them via the Nations League. The final tournament takes place in spring and only the group winners take part.
The Germans’ toughest competitor in the preliminary round is Denmark, where the DFB team lost 2-0 in their first game under Carlson. The second leg will take place in Rostock on December 1st. With a 2-0 win or a win with a difference of more than three goals, the Hrubesch team would take the lead in the table. The last preliminary round game will take place on December 5th with the Welsh women having no points so far.
