For Sebastian Ofner – like his “stable mate” Dominic Thiem – the tennis season is over.
After the narrow quarter-final defeat in Sofia against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the 27-year-old Styrian took stock. Ofner is expected to end his year in 43rd place, having started as number 193.
Ofner far exceeds his expectations
An increase in the ranking by 150 places; Ofner had originally targeted the top 100 at the end of the year.
“The ranking is far better than expected. I would never have imagined that at the beginning of the year,” reflected this year’s French Open round of 16.
“It was an incredible season, a lot went well.” In the end, things could have “perhaps looked a little better” with one or two wins. But Ofner didn’t mourn that.
Goal for 2024: to stay in the top 50
For 2024, which will be his first full season on the ATP tour, Wolfgang Thiem’s protégé hopes to stabilize in the top 50.
“Over the last three or four months on the ATP tour, I’ve been able to gain valuable experience for next year – what I have to prepare for and where I still have to improve.”
That’s why he now wants to prepare as well as possible for next year. “Next season I would like to pick up where I left off and confirm it. Maintain my ranking, maybe even improve it, but just within the same radius. That’s difficult enough on the ATP tour as it is.”
He still wants to get one or two percent out of himself.
