Santa Croce Defeats Maury’s Tuscania in Volleyball Serie B Opener

TUSCANIA – Sudden and unexpected setback for Maury’s Com Cavi Tuscania forced, in front of their audience, to give up the entire stake to a Lupi Santa Croce team who, except for the first part of the match, have always had in their hands the reins of the game. The Tuscans took advantage of the home team’s bad day as they were unable to express themselves at the levels they had accustomed us to. For the record, the top scorer of the match was Santa Croce’s number 4, Nicolas Brucini, who scored 21 points.

At the starting whistle of Dalila Villano and Giulio Bolici, Perez Moreno lines up his team with Marrazzo as director and Buzzelli diagonally, Festi and Simoni in the centre, Genna and Lucarelli as wing, Rizzi libero. Pagliai responds with Giannini as director and Gatto as opposite, Petratta and Brucini as flank, Matterini and Russo as central defenders, Gabbriellini as libero.

It starts in balance until halfway through the first set with Tuscania finding the maximum advantage thanks also to an ace from Simoni with the help of the 16/11 tape. It seems like the decisive extension but Santa Croce recovers the deficit – two consecutive aces from Russo – and reaches 23 all. Festi’s block closes the set in favor of the hosts 25/23.

The second set is also a point to point with Santa Croce still ahead 9/10. Tuscania is rather imprecise and the guests take advantage of this to place the first break 9/12. The Tuscan block-defense works and neutralizes the attacks of the hosts who are forced to give up the first set of the 19/25 season to their opponents.

The third was completely dominated by the guests and ended with Tuscania at 18.

The quarter was as beautiful as it was fought with captain Buzzelli and his teammates responding point for point until 21 all, often giving the impression of being able to right the fate of the match (22/25).
