Sami Chouchi Falls Short of Bronze at Oceania Judo Open

Sami Chouchi lost in the fight for bronze in less than 90 kilos at the Oceania Judo Open, a Grand Prix level tournament, on Saturday in Perth.

Chouchi, 41st in the world rankings, entered the competition in the second round against Romanian Vlad Visan (IJF 85), whom he beat on ippon in 2:17. Chouchi was beaten in the quarter-finals by Azerbaijan’s Murad Fatiyev (IJF 19), on waza-ari, after 3:24. Sent to repechage, he defeated the American John Jayne (IJF 30) on ippon in 2:16, which allowed him to fight for bronze. But against the South Korean Sungho Lee (IJF 67), Chouchi received three penalties in 2:47 of fighting and was disqualified.

Friday, Mina Libeer (IJF 27) won bronze in -57 kilos, Amber Ryheul (IJF 24) lost in the repechage and Ellen Salens (IJF 42) was eliminated in the first round.
