Tennis ace Lisicki celebrates title comeback after an injury break

The tennis ace, who was born in Troisdorf, celebrated her first tournament success in Canada since 2014, when she was victorious at the WTA tournament in Hong Kong. This long-awaited triumph was made possible by the final victory against Canadian Stacey Fung (world number 230) in three sets (7:6, 6:7, 6:3).

Even though the tournament was just a smaller ITF 100 event, the Berliner was of course overjoyed with her performance and her first trophy in around nine years. With the victory, Sabine Lisicki, who at her best was ranked twelfth in the world rankings, climbed a whopping 95 places and is currently at number 281. This means that participation in major competitions is still a long way off, but a ray of hope for her Lisicki’s future was still to perform in Calgary.

Sabine Lisicki beams and shares her joy with her fans

The German’s joy at the victory in North America was obvious at the awards ceremony, where a big, friendly smile was put on her face. Sabine Lisicki subsequently expressed her feelings on her Instagram appearance: “I still can’t believe it. Almost three years ago to the day I had a serious knee accident, ligaments were worn out, I had a three and a half hour operation, 19 months of brutal rehab. To come back and be on the court again, playing professional tennis, was almost impossible and yet we did it.”

Addressing her fans, Lisicki also noted: “Thank you for your support over the years! You know who you are!” Of course, the almost 180,000 followers know exactly about the difficult ordeal of their tennis star and, for their part, praised the special success in Calgary. One user wrote: “Dear Sabine! Congratulations on your outstanding performance! You more than deserve it.” Another Instagram user noted: “Congratulations, Sabine. This is one of the best stories in the entire tennis calendar year! The tenacity you have shown to come back at this stage of your career is simply outstanding and inspiring to everyone.”

“Bum Bum Bee” still has it

Lisicki, lovingly dubbed “Bum Bum Bee” by fans and the media in 2013, the year of her legendary Wimbledon participation, still holds the world serve record in women’s tennis, which is an incredible 210.8 km/h. She achieved this in a duel against Ana Ivanovic in 2014.

In Canada, Sabine Lisicki also proved that she hasn’t forgotten anything despite a long break from injury and rehab. As before, her serves mostly exceeded 200 km/h, and the German also managed an impressive 53 aces within five matches. Shortly after the successful final match point, Lisicki appeared overwhelmed by her own performance when she first threw her racket aside and then sank to the ground herself. For a few seconds, the relieved player lay on her back or crouched down, repeatedly holding her hands to her face in disbelief – all to the constant cheers of the spectators.
