Ron Sabbé of Mijdrecht Receives Award for Volunteer Work

Mijdrecht – Ron Sabbé from Mijdrecht was appointed Member of the Order of Orange Nassau on Thursday, November 16 last, due to his active efforts as a volunteer at the Buurtbus, the Red Cross and Badminton Association Veenshuttle. He received the award from Mayor Maarten Divendal. This happened during a festive meeting at which the Buurtbus celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Ron Sabbé (1954) has been involved with the Buurtbus since its inception and has been driving as a volunteer driver on Buurtbus 526 since the beginning. The Buurtbus runs from Monday to Saturday from the bus station in Uithoorn to Breukelen and vice versa. In addition to his job as a KLM pilot, Sabbé was intensively involved in building and organizing the neighborhood bus association. He is responsible for training new volunteer drivers and therefore conducts an extensive instruction ride every Saturday to guide aspiring drivers. In recent years he has also been involved in drawing up a manual for all drivers.

Since 1999, Sabbé has also been an active member of Badminton Association Veenshuttle, where he took on all kinds of volunteer tasks. Due to his enthusiastic training methods, the number of youth members increased considerably after it had previously decreased because the training for youth was given at a different location. From 2014 he also provides recreational training. His volunteer work is mainly characterized by, where necessary, individual (training) guidance and warm introduction and guidance of newcomers. He was also one of the founders of the digital association magazine and was editor.

Ron Sabbé was a very involved and active volunteer at the Uithoorn/De Kwakel department of the Red Cross from 2013 to 2020. His efforts in wheelchair cycling in particular were of great significance. He not only provided the materials, but also coordinated the other volunteers, made schedules and maintained contact with the cyclists. Without his input, the Red Cross wheelchair cycling would not have taken off so rapidly.

In addition to being a member, Sabbé has also been a volunteer at Tennis Club De Ronde Vener since 2017. He carries out maintenance work on the courts here, helps with the bar services and provides various manual services.
