There is the definitive green light to bring baseball back to Quartu. In fact, a segment of the historic Quartu 2000 football field, in the Sa Cora area, will be used by a sports club specializing in mini baseball. Young batsmen and runners ready to train and compete for victories after eleven rounds, the classic “innings”, therefore, in the new sports center of Is Arenas. The Milia Council said yes to the technical-economic feasibility project. There are 700 thousand euros available, all money already in hand. The restyling of the stands has been confirmed, as well as the expansion of the football field which can also be used for 11-a-side matches, the fitness and jogging path plus the areas to guarantee sport also for the disabled. And also a food area, probably a mini restaurant. As for the baseball area, barring unforeseen circumstances, the intention is to complete it by 2024. But the Is Arenas project is much broader.
We start immediately with the sports area, with the water/fire prevention adaptation of the system located on the 11-a-side football pitch, the renovation of the changing rooms, the sanitary systems and the caretaker’s house. New toilets will also be created for spectators at both ends of the stands. A structural redevelopment of the existing grandstand in the Is Arenas pitch is planned as well as the construction of a new covered grandstand in laminated wood and a metal sheet roof surmounted by a photovoltaic system capable of meeting all the needs of using the pitch. More generally, the project envisages enlarging the sports facilities by integrating new recreational and recreational functions and allocating previously unused spaces to activities such as exhibitions, temporary markets, refreshment areas, play areas for children and toilets, thus representing a hub essential for citizenship in the relationship with the nearby Molentargius park. From the documents it emerges that the new grandstand will be named after the Cagliari legend Gigi Riva. “The project as a whole represents an integrated mix of services dedicated to sport, leisure and the environment, with an equipped green buffer area that will overlook the Molentargius park, maintaining the balance of the naturalistic area unchanged”. In the future, the Is Arenas compendium will present itself as a vast area between via S’Arrulloni, via Beethoven and the park, whose central axis will be represented by a 9 meter wide “boulevard” which will connect all the structures in combination with the surrounding green areas, from which further pedestrian and cycle connections will extend in the form of open spaces surrounded by greenery, from which shaded areas with benches will be created.
