Rene van der Gijp: Ajax’s Recovery from Poor Start Could Take Years

Rene van der Gijp does not think that Ajax will quickly recover from this poor start to the season. According to the former footballer, this could take several years.

“I’m a bit of an outsider,” Van der Gijp begins Football zone. “I am not for Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV. Ajax’s crisis is also a bit of fun, they were taken by surprise. This could happen to anyone, except Ajax. That also makes it fun to watch.”

“Overmars has made a few good purchases and also had the wind at its back and a bit of luck,” he continues. “I don’t want to beat our TV program (at the time Voetbal Inside, ed.) on the back, but Ajax actually bought Ziyech through us. We said: ‘If you don’t buy it, then…’ Ajax hesitated, like: ‘Should we do that now?’”

How long can it take before Ajax is back at the top? “That will take some time, but that also applied to AS Monaco at the time, which was bought out. Players like Anthony Martial, Kylian Mbappé etc. left. You can’t really find your way back up in six months, it will take three or four years.”
