Karl Karner, founding father of judo sport in Burgenland and active throughout Austria for many years, died at the age of 82. The association expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved family: “With him, the sport of judo has lost a pioneer from the very beginning.”

The qualified sports teacher from Oberwart played a leading role in the founding of the Burgenland Judo Association in 1976. In addition to his professional work as a sports teacher at what was then the secondary school in Oberwart, he was also active as a trainer and training officer for the Austrian Judo Association and was a guarantee of impeccable trainer training for decades.

Great success as a junior national coach

As a junior national coach, he and his athletes achieved three junior European championship titles between 1970 and 1979. He demonstrated his affinity for all sports as a long-standing top official at ASVÖ Burgenland. His publications on the subject of “Falling but Safe” were used in all educational institutions in Austria for many decades.

At the regional level, the Oberwart Judo Club was founded in 1964 – it was always a matter close to Karner’s heart. Until shortly before his 80th birthday, he continued to stand on the mat every week and passed on his inexhaustible knowledge and passion to children and all judo enthusiasts.

Karner held the 8th Dan degree and was president of the Burgenland regional association from 1983 to 1995. He was then appointed honorary president. “With Professor Karl Karner, judo sport in Burgenland has lost a pioneer from the very beginning. I learned judo from him and was also able to take over the Oberwart Judo Club from him,” said current President Roland Poiger.

The Burgenland Judo Association will always have fond memories of Professor Karl Karner. President Poiger expresses the association’s deep condolences to the bereaved family.
