With the 2-1 win in Belgrade during the week, Leipzig made it through to the Champions League. Compared to this game, Marco Rose only brought Klostermann on for Henrichs (bench) from the start – Simakan played on the right in the back four. Freiburg’s staff was even quicker to tell after the 5-0 win against Backa Topola, and coach Christian Streich trusted the same staff.

Speaking of fast: Leipzig didn’t take much time to take the lead. After a dominant initial phase, Xavi inimitably shot the ball from 20 meters into the right corner (6th). As a result, only Leipzig took place, the SCF just ran behind and could hardly break free. But RB rarely finished the game cleanly, so it only became dangerous several times through Sesko (18th) and Openda (23rd).

After half an hour, Leipzig slowed down and Freiburg promptly got into the game better. An offside goal from Sildilla (35th) was the guests’ first approach to scoring, and they equalized with the last action of the first half. Röhl ran off in his own half, went past Haidara, Simakan and Klostermann and, after a strong solo, finished precisely into the right corner (45th + 6th).

Grifo foult Baumgartner

Freiburg carried this momentum into the second half, from then on the game was balanced and the guests dared to move forward more and more often. Höler scored SCF’s second offside goal of the evening (53′), shortly afterwards Blaswich parried against Grifo (58′).

But that was it for Freiburg’s offensive power, they ran out of strength – probably also because of the English week. This was also the case with captain Grifo, who came too late against substitute Baumgartner in his own penalty area after 77 minutes and hit the Austrian on the foot. Referee Patrick Ittrich only recognized this in the review area, and Openda converted the following penalty to make it 2-1 (79th).

Leipzig’s double strike at the right time

Leipzig’s lead wasn’t really up in the air at this point, RB played very poorly for a long time in the second half. With the goal behind them, the Saxons turned things up again briefly and put the lid on the game with a double strike: Xavi fed Baumgartner, whose deflected shot found its way into the right corner (80th).

That was the end of the close game and nothing more happened in the last few minutes. With their fourth home win this season, RB jumps to fourth place, while SCF remains in eighth place during the international break. RB will continue in Wolfsburg in two weeks on Saturday (3:30 p.m.). Freiburg welcomes Darmstadt at the same time.
