Premier League Weekend Recap: Manchester City and Liverpool Draw 1-1, Arsenal Takes the Lead, and Upsets Abound

The Premier League cracker between Manchester City and Liverpool ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Nathan Aké was responsible for the opening goal, but saw Trent Alexander-Arnold equalize just before the end. Later in the day, Arsenal won with a late goal at Brentford to take the lead.

Aké got the home crowd in Manchester on the benches after almost half an hour with a nice action. The defender, who missed the international matches with the Dutch team, played two men out and found Erling Haaland. The top striker scored convincingly.

With the lead in hand, Manchester City seemed on its way to another home victory. That was prevented ten minutes before the end by Alexander-Arnold. The full-back scored the equalizer with a slider in the corner on a pass from Mohamed Salah.

Virgil van Dijk played the entire match for Liverpool, the number two in the Premier League. Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo came on for manager Jürgen Klopp’s team after the break. Aké played the entire match at Manchester City.

The draw between numbers one and two allowed Arsenal to take advantage. ‘The Gunners’ won 0-1 at Brentford later in the day and thus took top position. Kai Havertz scores the only goal in the 89th minute at the Gtech Community Stadium in London. Mark Fleken was on goal for the home club.

In Burnley there was a leading role for former Ajax player Mohammed Kudus. West Ham United seemed to be heading for a defeat against Burnley until the final stages, until the Ghanaian attacker changed that. With two assists, Kudus played an important role in Bournemouth’s 1-2 win.

There was a reason to cheer for Newcastle United fans on Saturday. Coach Eddie Howe’s team won by a large margin against Chelsea, which had to concede four goals: 4-1. Newcastle opened the score after thirteen minutes through Alexander Isak.

Chelsea did something back with a nice free kick from Raheem Sterling, but in the second half the curtain fell for the Londoners. After the sixtieth minute, both Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton scored for Newcastle, after which Reece James was booked for the second time in the 73rd minute and left the field with a red card.

From that moment on things went from bad to worse The Blues’. Both Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill were booked for unsportsmanlike conduct, after which Anthony Gordon hammered Chelsea: 4-1. Thanks to the victory, Newcastle takes sixth place. Chelsea is tenth.

Nottingham Forest against Brighton & Hove Albion ended 2-3, while Luton Town won 2-1 at home against Crystal Palace.
