Pittsburgh Steelers Fire Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada After Struggles

Los Pittsburgh Steelers announced the firing of their offensive coordinator, Matt Canadaafter two seasons in which he was never able to place the team’s attack at the level of the great defense.

El head coach Mike Tomlinannounced this Tuesday the departure from Canada.

“Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication and wish him the best in his career”Tomlin said in a statement.

The Steelers offense has struggled this season. The latest example occurred on Sunday in a 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Brownsprompting a statement of enormous annoyance from running back Najee Harris.

The poor numbers on the Steelers’ attack

Pittsburgh is 6-4 and in third place in the AFC North Divisionbut it has a negative point differential with -29and they have been outplayed in every game this season.

Steelers rank 28th in points per game (16.6), 28th in offensive yards per game (280.1) and 31st in passing yards per game (170) this season, reported ESPN.

The second year quarterback, Kenny Pickettoccupies the 25th place in the NFL in passing yards with 1,722and it is in the 28th place in passer rating with a very poor 35.7.

On Sunday, Harris was asked if the team’s winning record was encouraging despite the offensive woes.

“You could do two things. You could look at the record and say, ‘Okay, we’re still good right now.’ Or we could look at the record and say, ‘If we keep playing this kind of football, how long is that going to last? shit?’ That’s how I see it”Harris explained.

“Everyone might look at it like it’s a good record, but I mean, it’s the NFL. Winning like we have won’t get us anywhere.”

Canada, 51, had been the Steelers’ offensive coordinator from 2021.

Steelers fans were crying out for Matt Canada to leave

Frustration outside the organization has been building for months. The fans chanted “Fire Canada”despite a victory on September 18 against Cleveland, a chorus that became omnipresent throughout the region and worthy of memes on social networks.

Perhaps most damaging to Canada is the way Quarterback Kenny Pickett’s growth has stalledwho was selected in the first round of the 2022 Draft.

Pickett had a promising rookie season a year ago and showed flashes of being a difference-maker during this summer’s preseason.

It all faded away once the 2023 season started and the games started counting.

Pickett has only six touchdown passes (only two since early October), and his accuracy has declined even after the Steelers recently moved Canada from the coach’s box to the sideline in an effort to facilitate better communication and fluidity.

They have not announced the replacement as offensive coordinator

So far there has been no word on who might take over at the helm of Pittsburgh’s offense, although the coach de quarterbacks Mike Sullivanwho previously served as offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay and with the New York Giantsit is assumed that he will receive the job on an interim basis.

The decision comes as the Steelers are ready to begin a manageable stretch in their schedule. None of his next five opponents, Bengals (5-5) (twice), Patriots (2-8), Cardinals (2-9) y Colts 5-5).

Pittsburgh has long been a model of stability in the NFL and rarely makes a coaching move during the season, the last time a coach was fired midseason was in 1941.

But as Pickett seemed to regress and options became increasingly limited, Tomlin decided there was only one big move left to make…and he did.
