Phoenix Flames and Fitzwimarc Achieve Victories: Weekly Badminton League Recap

Phoenix Flames kicked off their Mixed Premier league campaign with a 6-3 victory over their Second team. Holly Sims and Jay Clark secured three perfect rubbers and were back up by a brace from Tim Baskett and Tracey Haylett and one from Corinne Telling and Omprakash Dash. Carly Horsler and Danny Peach picked up two rubbers while Russell Dobson and Sara Thompson got one win. The defeat leaves the Flames Seconds bottom and winless after four matches while the Firsts are one place and one point above them.

In the Men’s Premier, Fitzwimac bounced back from defeat in their opening match with a 9-0 win over Phoenix Flames. Harris Foster-Carter and Zak Pryor and Ryan Pinnock and Phil Tuffee both picked up hat-tricks without dropping a game and Paul Chaplin and Freddie Kemble-Jones also won all three of their rubbers. Alex Cheung and Tim Baskett came closest to getting a point for a Flames team missing several key players through injury. Fitz moved up to second while Phoenix remain last.

Down in the Men’s Second division, Hawkwell and Phoenix Flames Seconds played out an extremely tight match where four of the nine rubbers went to three. In the end, Hawkwell won out 5-4 thanks to a hat-trick from Keith Wood and Gavin Lewis and a double from Jamie Cole and Russell Dobson. Tim Baskett and Lewis Pain picked up two rubbers for the Flames with Peter Lewin and Jack Baskett and James Georgiev and Joeal Tony getting one each. The Hawks close the gap at the top to three points on Phoenix Flames Seconds.

In the Ladies Premier, Fitzwimarc started their season with a 6-0 triumph over the newly promoted Phoenix Flames. Natalie Smith, Pam Lee, Chloe Baker and Sarah Hall made up the winning team for Fitz, who will be looking to go one better this year after finishing runners-up last year.

Eastwood Seconds made it two wins from two in the Masters First division with a 5-1 win over Phoenix Flames Fourths. Dawn Muggleton and Martin Rainbow both won three rubbers each for the home side to ensure victory. Jo Howard-Simpson and Gary Rose helped Phoenix to their point. Eastwood move to the top of the league.

Finally, in the Combination First division, Fitzwimarc Seconds secured a 6-0 win away at SLH Rayleigh. Chloe Peacham and Donna Venables both won three perfect rubbers and Gary Curtis and Malcolm Woodruff also picked up hat-tricks. Joe Garnett and Tom Negus came closest to getting a rubber for SLH. Fitz move into second with victory while SLH stay in fourth.
