Oviedo Badminton Club: Reigning as Spain’s Best Team for the Past Five Weeks

The best badminton team in Spain for at least the last five weeks is Asturian. The Oviedo Badminton Club (CBO) has led the Unique Club Ranking since last October. Implemented in June, this classification orders the national teams based not only on the performance of their senior teams (the CBO, after a difficult start, is fourth in its group, in which five teams compete, although it is only one victory away from the third classified), but also taking into account the rest of the categories: sub23 and sub18, where the CBO is the leader; sub17, where they are eighth; sub15, in which they are in fifth place; sub13, in which he is sixth and a sub11 in which he occupies thirty-fifth place.

“The ranking establishes an average between the quality and depth of the squads, because you can have two great players, but that does not mean they can be the best at the team level if the entire team is taken into account,” says César González, technical director. of the CBO, in favor of the establishment of the new classification system. “Many clubs had been arguing for several years that it was necessary,” he explains. “There was already an individual ranking, there had to be a team ranking, since we compete collectively. Clubs like ours, with many high-level participants, we did not have recognition.”

However, after more than a month as number one, the CBO is not satisfied and aspires to continue at the top. “Our goal – says González – is to continue being the best for as many weeks as possible.” To do this, the representatives of the Oviedo team must play metal in the Spanish championships of lower categories that are held until the end of the year. The most immediate, this weekend in Cartagena, is the sub19, in which Adolfo López will participate, starting as national number two of his age in the doubles and mixed doubles modalities and who faces the event “with great enthusiasm”: “This year we have had good results, I hope we can achieve a medal to close the season in the best way.”

López, in the CBO youth team for four years, explains the club’s rise from two key points: work culture and camaraderie. “We try our best in all training sessions and fight until the end,” he analyzes, “we always try to give everything even if we don’t have our best day. In addition, the atmosphere is very good, we support each other a lot and that helps us improve.” and that the training is of quality.”

Another of the CBO’s most notable players is Laura Álvarez. At 19 years old, she is number four in the absolute female ranking. Also trained in the Oviedo youth academy, she admits the “pride” of belonging to the best team in Spain and especially celebrates the 180 players that the club has, a record number in its history: “It is something very important. With the covid, fewer came children, but now there are a lot of them coming to play again. Everyone wants to play in what is, officially, the number one in national badminton: the CBO.
