Overall World Cup, Avola bronze in foil

.

Giorgio Avola returns to the podium in Istanbul, Türkiye. For him, thirteen years after his first time, it is the seventeenth time in his career.

Its success means that Modica Fencing continues, for the fourth weekend in a row, the exceptional positive streak that has seen different athletes on the podium of national and international events in the under17, under20, under23 and absolute categories.

The event took place in Türkiye first Cup match of the 2023/2024 season, which will lead to Paris Summer Olympicsand Avola started from the preliminary rounds, brilliantly passed with all victories.

The following day in the main draw at 64 he made his debut against the American Gassner, against whom he struggled to find the right rhythm, but still managed to win 15/13. In the round of 32 he had to face the Czech Choupenitich (bronze medal at the last Olympics), and well aware that it was necessary to change gear compared to the previous round, he took to the stage displaying a performance of the highest tactical level which allowed him to dominate his opponent; who in the final attempted a comeback, blocked at a score of 15/12 for the Modican.

In the round of 16 the opponent was the Polish Siess, who immediately advanced up to 1/5, before Giorgio took the measure of him and froze him with 15 hits to 11, throwing a series of hits of great technical workmanship that they were worth the eight-man final.

In the quarter-finals came the surprise of the Japanese Baba, a new name in the world event who in the previous round had interrupted the path of the vice world champion, the French Le Fort. A match which for Avola proved to be much simpler than expected, dominated from start to finish, at times with an embarrassing supremacy, which in just over a minute saw him leading by as much as 11/1, before concluding with great peace of mind for 7/15. Semi-final against the opponent of a thousand battles, the American Massialas, with the two who know each other well, exchanging a series of jabs in a balanced match up to 7 all; then the American, taking advantage of a physical decline of the Modican, who was unable to react, extended and closed in his favor 15/8, going on to win the match too.

However, Giorgio Avola’s remains a splendid podium, unexpected for many, but excellent great value especially for the fencing that he managed to express.
