A goal that will result in a hibernation in the Champions League. Loïs Openda’s strike at Red Star Belgrade secured victory for RB Leipzig. The Germans follow Manchester City – which, led by an in-form Erling Haaland – effortlessly qualified for the knockout phase of the champions ball.

A lovely curl from Xavi Simons in the first half. A line from Loïs Openda in the second.

RB Leipzig seemed to be able to easily secure Champions League football after the winter break with their fingers in their noses – and thanks to a touch of Belgian input.

But a late own goal by Benjamin Henrichs ten minutes before the whistle still left Leipzig weak at the knees. The home team launched a final offensive in Belgrade, but Openda and co held out.

The Red Devil is following the example of his colleagues Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne.

The former was rested after his miracle performance against Bournemouth last weekend. Doku himself was allowed to appear in the slot for 10 minutes, but the lightning-fast winger saw that his team had everything under control against Young Boys.

Erling Haaland had the chance to open the scoring from the spot after 20 minutes. One that the Norwegian did not pass up. When Foden delivered another shot on the stroke of half-time, the Manchester crowd knew the match was over.

Haaland closed things down with his 39th goal in 34 CL appearances. It seems certain that he will effortlessly break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of 40 goals in 45 matches.

The question becomes before or after the winter break.
