In the beginning of the game, the Ogrenians did everything they could to create an unexpectedly lively intrigue in this game, accumulating an 11-point lead (29:18) in the first quarter. “Ogres” basketball players Kārlis Apsītis and Kristaps Mediss were especially hot, who hit not a single long shot.
In fast-paced basketball, teams focused on offense with less thought on defense. The qualities of “Ogres” newcomer Nigel Johnson came in handy in this style of battle. The American, who started the season in “Rīgas ZeļļĪs”, made the defense of “Prometey” quite difficult, aggravating the situation and creating opportunities for his teammates.
However, the strongest club in Ukraine was able to silence the attack of the visitors, getting significantly closer to the end of the half – 42:44.
After the break, “Prometey” regained the balance for a while (47:47) and could take the lead, however, Oleksandr Lipovy missed two free throws. The Ogres responded with accurate shots by Mata Jucik and Apsīš, reaching 52:47, and in the second part of the third quarter, they further increased the advantage (69:59).
In the final ten minutes, “Ogres” basketball players’ carelessness and inaccuracy in the attack allowed “Prometey” to come within a point (68:69). The dry period that lasted for several minutes was interrupted by Rihards Zöberg’s two accurate shots.
Less than three and a half minutes before the end of regular time, Medis hit a long shot (77:71), however, “Prometey” regained the lost in the next attack, when Nigerian Kaleb Agada made a long three.
At the end of the match, attacks from the perimeter did not bring fruit to the “Prometey” team, whereas “Ogre” secured its brightest success this season with a pragmatic game.
Apsītis was the most productive among the Ogrenians, who not only scored 22 points, hitting eight of ten shots from the field and both free throws, but also collected eight rebounds and earned a utility index of 31. Johnson had 20 points (6/11; 6/7), seven assists and an index of 28.
