At the beginning, Genichi Tamatsuka, chairman of Japan Rugby League One, took the stage and gave the following address. “There are only two weeks left until the start of League One’s third season. I would like to focus on three keywords for this season.”

Chairman Tamatsuka

“First of all, the first thing is “League One in the world.” Expectations for League One are increasing all over the world. At the recent World Cup 2023 final, both teams had a total of 14 players in League One. They were players from our own team, and some of the top-level players who were participating in the World Cup are also participating.”

“In February next year, Super Rugby’s Chiefs and Blues will come to Japan for a ‘cross-border match☆’ and play against the top four teams from last season’s League One. Going forward, there will be no need for League One in world rugby. I want to make this a league that doesn’t have to be.”

“Each team has gained the know-how and is working hard together with the local community. Last year we had 750,000 spectators, but we hope to reach 1 million this season or at the latest by the fourth season.”

“Finally, our goal is to increase the value of rugby and spread the goodness of rugby. The parent company also supports the values of rugby in terms of human resource development and education. We hope to further increase that value through League One.” I want to continue to improve. The level of not only Division 1 but also Divisions 2 and 3 is increasing. Please keep an eye on it.”
