The 2023 NFL Thanksgiving schedule features three NFC divisional rivalry games. All three games have unique storylines, but the spreads for each game are more than a touchdown. The Detroit Lions will host the Green Bay Packers in the opener, the Dallas Cowboys will host the Washington Commanders in the second game and the Seattle Seahawks will host the San Francisco 49ers in the nightcap.
This is also the first year there will be a Black Friday game. In an AFC East showdown, the Miami Dolphins travel to New York to take on the Jets on Friday afternoon.
The Lions will play in their 84th Thanksgiving day game, which is by far the most of any NFL team. They’re 37-44-2. Dallas is second and will play its 56th game this year. Dallas will be favored by double-digits for the third straight game after covering against the Giants at home and at Carolina on Sunday.
If you want to win trivia at your family meal, the only team to never appear on Thanksgiving is the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Buccaneers, Panthers and Bengals have appeared once each.
Usually, it’s the NFL placing an interesting team to play Detroit in the early game of Thanksgiving, but that trend has reversed in recent years. Now, it is the Lions who are one of the most talked about teams in the league. Lions quarterback Jared Goff helped erase a 12-point deficit in the final five minutes of their 31-26 win against Chicago on Sunday.
One injury to keep an eye on is Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith. Smith suffered an elbow injury in their loss to the Rams, but he did return for a final drive and led the Seahawks into field goal range.
