New Green Gym to Boost Sports Facilities in Florence

A new two hundred seat gym for basketball and volleyball comes to life, equipped with a green area of approximately 4,500 square metres. The structure, built according to the principles of green building in via del Mezzetta, is currently in its foundations although according to the technicians it should be ready at the beginning of the next school year. This is a 3 million investment by the Municipality, which, for the operation, also benefited from the support of the Tuscany Region which received 400 thousand euros thanks to the Development and Cohesion Fund. The area where the new 1,400 square meter multifunctional gym will be built is owned by the metropolitan city and is part of the Peano-Gramsci-Saffi school complex. The structure, therefore, is designed for high school students (in the morning), but also for competitive basketball and volleyball championships. Precisely in this sense, given that the expenses are borne by the Municipality, the Metropolitan City and Palazzo Vecchio formalize an agreement in which the administration is expected to use the property free of charge for a period of years commensurate with the size of the investment.

“The gym will improve and strengthen the entire system of sports facilities in the Campo di Marte district, which is also very developed here”, observes mayor Dario Nardella after laying the first stone. “If Florence is among the top places in Italy in terms of sportsmanship it is because the municipal administration invests a lot in facilities for the various disciplines. We will continue to do so because investing in sport means investing in healthcare. One euro spent in sport saves three euros on healthcare, because it keeps people healthy”. As a Region, adds the governor Eugenio Giani, “we have contributed with around 400 thousand euros to an intervention by the Municipality qualifying for the promotion of sport in the relationship with schools”. Furthermore, the operation provides an important space for the disabled and attention to new construction technologies, such as green building and energy efficiency”. In just a few years, concludes the councilor for Sport, Cosimo Guccione, “we have supported a significant amount of interventions in sports facilities. The new gym in via del Mezzetta will be a point of reference for the entire neighborhood. It is a system that lowers costs, because it is designed with energy saving systems, a structure that seeks to benefit young people, students and those who want to undertake activities. It will be available to the population for sporting and leisure needs.”
