Ten NBA games were scheduled Friday, and the leaders of each conference, Minnesota and Boston, were both beaten. Less surprising, San Antonio was too, at Golden State, despite Victor Wembanyama’s 22 points.
Bad day after the party for the leaders! While no games took place Thursday in the NBA due to Thanksgiving, twenty teams were on the floor Friday, starting with leaders Boston and Minnesota, and they both lost. The Celtics fell to the surprise team from the East, Orlando, now second, who won 113-96 for their sixth victory in a row. If Boston generally dominated for a little more than two quarters, the Magic finished strong, with a final quarter won 36-22, in the wake of world champion Moritz Wagner, who finished with 27 points in total, including 10 in a row in the last quarter (23 for his friend Paolo Banchero, 26 for Jayson Tatum on the Celtics side). The third in the East, Milwaukee, hosted one of the dunces of the Conference, Washington, and they beat them by three points (131-128). The match was extremely close, with 19 lead changes, 22 ties, and never more than a seven-point lead for either team. But after the Wizards came back to 129-128 with four seconds remaining on a 3-point shot from Kyle Kuzma (22pts), Damian Lillard (31pts) did not miss his two free throws (131-128) , while Kuzma missed the equalizing shot at the buzzer. Note the 31 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo and especially the 39 from Brook Lopez, who equals his career record (39 against Detroit in 2011). This is the first time in franchise history that three Bucks have finished with more than 30 points! Still in the East, New York, sixth, beat Miami, fifth, by a score of 100-98. Jimmy Butler’s Heat (23pts) completely collapsed after leading by 21 points in the middle of the third quarter, and even by nine again with 3’50 to go (87-96). The Knicks in fact signed a 12-0 in the money-time thanks to the duo Jalen Brunson (24pts) – RJ Barrett (18pts) and won on the wire.
Sacramento offers Minnesota
In the West, leader Minnesota fell at home to sixth-place Sacramento with a score of 111-124. The Kings led almost from start to finish against the Wolves who, for once, missed out on their match, despite Anthony Edwards’ 35 points, Karl-Anthony Towns’ 27 and the double-double of Rudy Gobert (12pts, 11rbds). They were able to count on a huge De’Aron Fox, who finished with 36 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists. Minnesota, which loses at home for the first time in eight games, sees Oklahoma City (which did not play Friday) come back to the level. Phoenix is fourth, after winning 79-110 at Memphis in a match which definitely turned in favor of the Suns just before halftime. Devin Booker had a blast, scoring 40 points for the first time this season, shooting 15 of 21. Kevin Durant had been left to rest. One of the surprises of the night came from the 105-96 defeat of champion Denver (5th) at Houston (7th) in a one-sided match. Nikola Jokic nevertheless broke his season record, with 38 points (but also 19 rebounds and 8 assists), but he was alone, Aaron Gordon notably finishing 0 out of 12 on shots.
And eleven for the Spurs…
Finally, San Antonio, last in the West, suffered its eleventh defeat in a row, on the floor of Golden State (11th): 118-112. The Spurs, as is often the case, had a good start to the match and led by ten points in the first quarter and another nine at the start of the second. But the Warriors woke up and led throughout the second half, except for a few seconds in the middle of the third quarter, thanks in particular to Stephen Curry who finished with 35 points (7/14 at 3pts, his season record) . Victor Wembanyama scored 22 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and delivered 4 assists. But, well defended by Gary Payon II, he only made one of his 6 three-point shots and lost 6 balls. Next meeting: in Denver on Sunday.
