“A big pinch of disappointment” – 2:3 against Türkiye in Nagelsmann’s home premiere

National coach Julian Nagelsmann criticized the attitude of the national soccer team after the 2-3 defeat against Turkey on his home debut. “We didn’t have the emotionality in all positions,” said the DFB head coach. WELT reporter Dirk Schommertz recaps the international match.

In the bitter 2:3 against Turkey, the German team disrupted the away atmosphere in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Criticism of the behavior of the visiting fans comes from politics. FDP General Secretary Djir-Sarai sees this as, among other things, “deficits in integration policy”.

FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai has condemned the whistles and boos from numerous Turkish fans during the international match against the German team in Berlin. “It must hurt all of us when people born or raised in Germany boo the German national team during an international match in Germany,” criticized Djir-Sarai in an interview with BILD. At the game in the Olympic Stadium, which was sold out with 72,592 spectators, the German players around captain Ilkay Gündogan were loudly booed during the warm-up.

Tens of thousands of Turkish fans created a home game atmosphere for the Turkish team around their 3-2 win. “This shows once again the failures and deficits in integration policy,” said FDP politician Djir-Sarai. There was also criticism from the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU about the behavior of Turkish supporters at the game in Berlin.

“Why do these people live in Germany if their love continues to be for Turkey and its president?” said the CDU interior expert in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament, Gregor Golland, to the newspaper: “They are here voluntarily and yet are not ready to integrate . We must finally massively reduce the social incentives for migration and instead demand more commitment to our country, its dominant culture and its values!”

“It annoyed us,” says Bayern striker Müller

According to the police, there were 92 arrests around the international match and 71 investigations were initiated. Two police officers were injured during operations around the game. The security forces occasionally recorded the prohibited use of pyrotechnics both at the fan march by Turkish supporters and in the stadium. A police officer was hit with his fist during a confrontation. In addition, several Turkish supporters showed the greeting of the right-wing extremist movement “Gray Wolves”. There were isolated physical altercations between fans in the stadium.

The whistles from the Turkish fans “worried” the German team, said national player Thomas Müller. “You think, we want to show them that we will still win, or not give them the satisfaction that Turkey wins in Berlin in the end,” said the FC Bayern striker. The DFB selection wanted to show the visiting fans “that they are singing and whistling for the wrong flag,” added the FC Bayern Munich professional. After Kai Havertz’s early opening goal, the mostly much quieter German fans ironically shouted “away win, away win”.

In the end, the German team had to admit defeat in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s home debut. Their team’s victory was euphorically cheered by the Turkish supporters. “We actually wanted to show: “Hey, not like that!” But of course, sport and life don’t always go the way you want them to,” said Müller, who didn’t play.
