0-2 defeat against Austria – DFB team loses last international match of the year

In the European Championship test against Austria, the DFB selection lost 0-2 in Vienna. This means that Germany’s national soccer team also loses the last international match of the year. Leroy Sané received a red card after an assault. “We still have to work harder,” said Julian Nagelsmann.

Red card after violence, an overwhelmed defense and a harmless storm: Germany embarrassed itself with the defeat in Austria. The analysis by national coach Nagelsmann is accordingly. He chooses clear words.

A long pass was enough to throw the German defense into disarray and panic. Austria’s Michael Gregoritsch headed the ball from the halfway line to Baumgartner, who had a lot of open grass in front of him. Germany had once again exposed the midfield. Baumgartner took advantage of this with a pass to Marcel Sabitzer, who beat Jonathan Tah and scored to make it 1-0 for Austria. The hosts should have scored against an overwhelmed German defense before. They did it in the second half and deservedly won 2-0 (1-0) against an overwhelmed Julian Nagelsmann team.

It was an oath of revelation that the German national team made in Vienna, which culminated in Leroy Sané’s freak out. The new national coach Julian Nagelsmann has lost the two tough tests against Turkey (2:3) and Austria. In a way that gives little hope for the European Championships next summer.

Nagelsmann put Joshua Kimmich on the bench and trusted Ilkay Gündogan and Leon Goretzka in the center. The change didn’t help: As in the 2-3 win against Turkey, Germany couldn’t gain access to the game in the center and was far too far away from their opponents. It was easy for Austria to combine through the midfield and create chances. The DFB team couldn’t have complained about conceding four or five goals.

“It’s all homemade. We made it far too easy for Austria to create chances and score goals. We have to admit that it’s not just the defense. “It’s already starting,” said captain Ilkay Gündogan. That’s not how you become successful: “It can’t be any worse, maybe that’s the only positive aspect right now. The trainer knows the reasons very well. Each individual must be clear about what they can do to achieve optimal performance.”

“We will not be defensive monsters”

The coach knows where he “wants and can” start after the two defeats. “We have a lot of work ahead of us. We must not fall into the role of victim now. We have to accept that we have a lot of work. An unbelievable amount of work,” said Nagelsmann, choosing very clear and critical words. Nothing will come easy: “We won’t be defensive monsters in the summer either. The team has a great ability to play football. But if we play standing up, that’s not possible. We have to bring more dynamism to the pitch. When the referee blows his whistle, there is a lack of cohesion in the team. We are not brimming with self-confidence. Off the pitch the team is exceptional. But we can’t manage the transfer to the field.”

The national players are not used to defending much in their clubs like Bayern or BVB. That’s why the “absurd ball loss rate” like against Austria hurts particularly badly. “It’s a deserved defeat. We didn’t play our game and we have a lot of lessons we can learn from it,” said Mats Hummels. Benjamin Henrichs summed it up: “I am extremely angry and frustrated. We just played badly.”
