Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will no longer return as national coach of the German football players. The DFB Football Association announced on Saturday that the collaboration with the 55-year-old coach, who was already on hiatus, has been terminated with immediate effect.
“The team needs a new beginning in terms of sporting leadership,” the association said. Under Voss-Tecklenburg, the German women already failed in the group stage of the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. That had never happened before. The national coach then called in sick.
What caused tensions was that during a holiday away from football, Voss-Tecklenburg gave public lectures instead of analyzing the World Cup.
“It naturally raises a few question marks for me. I would certainly have wanted something different. That you say: OK, let’s first clarify what happened at the World Cup,” said midfielder Lena Oberdorf.
Short-lived success
Voss-Tecklenburg became national coach of Germany in 2018, succeeding Horst Hrubesch, who was interim coach at the time. At the 2019 World Cup in France, the German team lost to Sweden in the quarter-finals and therefore missed out on participation in the Olympic Games. At last year’s European Championships, the team reached the final, losing 1-2 to host country England.
Despite the loss, hope was back. Until the dramatic World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Before they were eliminated in the group stage, Germany was still at number two in the FIFA rankings. The country is now sixth, one place above the Netherlands.

After Voss-Tecklenburg’s withdrawal, assistant coach Britta Carlson took over her position before the association reappointed Hrubesch in early October.
The former international must ensure qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games. The European teams can only secure placement through the Nations League. The final tournament is in the spring and only the group winners participate.
