Michael Stich: From Wimbledon Triumph to HIV Foundation and Golden Sports Pyramid

In 1991, Stich triumphed with a final victory against Boris Becker on the “holy turf” at Wimbledon. A year later, he won Olympic gold in doubles alongside Becker. In 1993, Stich became ATP World Champion and led the German team to the World Cup in the same year Davis Cup victory. In 2015 he was inducted into the German Sports Hall of Fame.

Since 1994, Stich and his team have also been involved in the foundation named after him for children, young people and their families suffering from HIV and have been carrying out educational work on the subject of HIV and AIDS.

The Golden Sports Pyramid has been awarded since 2000. Previous winners include Steffi Graf, Franz Beckenbauer and Max Schmeling. The honor comes with prize money of 25,000 euros, which the winners traditionally pass on to a charity project in the sport of their choice.
