Marco van Basten thinks that Ar’jany Martha has already developed into an important player for Ajax. Every time the talent, who was retrained as a left back, had a starting position, Ajax won, notes the former footballer of AC Milan and Ajax, among others. The times that Martha was on the bench, the Amsterdam club achieved no results.

Rondo briefly focused on Ajax’s 5-0 win over Vitesse on Monday evening. Van Basten does not think the victory is special, but is surprised by Martha’s performance. “What I found striking is that that young left back played three times, and they won three times.” Martha made her debut against FC Volendam (2-0 win) and then also kicked off against SC Heerenveen (4-1 win) and Vitesse. “Twice he does not field him, and they lose,” said Van Basten, referring to the defeat in the Europa League match with Brighton (0-2) and the draw against Almere City FC (2-2).

“Would that boy have that much influence? I think so,” concludes the former striker of the Dutch national team. Presenter Wytse van der Groot reacts in surprise. “At stake?” he asks. “Yes, I really think so,” Van Basten concludes. The former coach of AZ and FC Utrecht, among others, believes that John van ‘t Schip should always field the twenty-year-old left foot.

Fellow analyst Giovanni van Bronckhorst then elaborates on the qualities of Martha, whom he calls a ‘modern back’. “He is a boy who wants to go forward, especially in combination with Steven Bergwijn on the inside. So yes, he is a boy with a future.”
