As of: November 25, 2023 9:27 p.m

Erling Haaland played his 48th game in the Premier League for Manchester City against Liverpool FC on Saturday (November 25th, 2023) – and scored for the 50th time. Despite this, Man City didn’t win. Arsenal FC took over the top of the table.

In the top game of the Premier Laegue, Manchester City and Liverpool FC drew 1-1 (1-0). Haaland had given Man City the lead in the 27th minute, but Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold equalized ten minutes from time.

Arsenal FC used the draw to jump to the top of the table thanks to a late header goal from substitute national player Kai Havertz in a 1-0 (0-0) win at Brentford FC.

Haaland’s record goal is not enough

“This is the biggest challenge in world football,” Klopp said of the defending champions before the game. City showed their class from the first second. Liverpool barely got out of their own half. The city pressing also caused a few play errors. Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker fit exactly into Phil Foden’s feet: the winger was denied by the Brazilian keeper (11th minute). On the other side, Darwin Nunez tested goalkeeper Ederson with a header (16th).

Man City took advantage of another failed tee shot from Alisson Becker: Nathan Ake passed to Haaland, who easily slotted in to make it 1-0. For Haaland it was goal number 50 in his 48th Premier League game – no player in England’s top league has ever reached this mark so quickly. The previous record man Andy Cole needed 65 games to score 50 goals.

Liverpool got better after the break – and rewarded themselves

Liverpool became a little more offensive after the break. Nunez was denied by Ederson after 70 minutes. Ten minutes later, however, the Brazilian was powerless: a precise shot from Alexander-Arnold landed in the City net, making the final score 1-1 for Liverpool.

Havertz redeems Arsenal FC

Runner-up Arsenal FC tried everything at Brentford FC for a long time, then Havertz, who was repeatedly criticized, redeemed the Gunners. The former Bundesliga professional from Bayer Leverkusen scored the winning goal shortly before the end with a header. Havertz was only substituted on by coach Mikel Arteta in the 79th minute.
