Madrid Municipal Sports Games: A Growing Amateur Competition Promoting Sports Values

EDITORIAL – The event was attended by two municipal representatives of the Madrid City Council: the delegate councilor for Sports, Sonia Cea, and the councilor of the Latina district, Alberto González.

This edition of the games, which has attracted an impressive 4,929 teams, featured exciting new features including three new sports: pickleball, orienteering and climbing. Participants will have the opportunity to compete in a wide spectrum of sporting disciplines, with a total of 12 team sports, including basketball, handball, baseball, soccer, 7-a-side soccer, indoor soccer, hockey, roller hockey, kayak-polo, rugby, volleyball and water polo. In addition, 21 individual sports will be held, such as chess, athletics, badminton, cross country, fencing, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, karate, wrestling, swimming, artistic swimming, orienteering, canoeing, pickleball, rowing, lifesaving and lifeguarding, tennis, table tennis and triathlon.

One of the highlights during the inauguration was the announcement by the Councilor for Sports about the implementation of a Protocol for the protection of minors against violence in the sports facilities and activities of the Madrid City Council. The main objective of this protocol is to create safe environments that promote the appropriate treatment of minors during their participation in sports and leisure activities. The document establishes guidelines and procedures to protect young people against any form of violence, with a special focus on violence of a sexual nature that may occur in the city’s municipal sports facilities and activities.

The Municipal Sports Games will take place in several phases throughout the city, with the expectation that more than 100,000 athletes will participate in this edition. Registration for the 21 individual sports will be completely free and will open during the month of November, with specific dates for each sport modality. When it comes to team sports, an impressive total of 2,974 teams have been registered in the under-18 categories and 1,955 in the senior category. This 6% increase in team participation compared to the previous season makes the Municipal Sports Games the largest amateur competition in Europe. Since their inception in 1980, these games have maintained their philosophy of promoting sports practice through a competition that values ​​more than sports results, the essential values ​​of sport, such as coexistence, camaraderie, effort, cohesion and integration.
