What a magical goal: Tim Stützle scores his Ottawa Senatos in overtime to win against the Detroit Red Wings. The national ice hockey player mutates into a baseball player and enchants the NHL.

Tim Stützle failed with his first attempt. His shot was blocked eight seconds before the end of overtime. Teammate Drake Batherson passed the puck again in front of the Detroit Red Wings goal. The German national ice hockey player stood there and waited for the disc to come in at waist height.

Stützle mutated into a baseball player on the ice, took the puck on a volley and hit it under the crossbar two seconds before the siren to make it 5-4 for the Ottawa Senators. It was the highlight of a spectacular game played in Stockholm in which the 21-year-old not only scored a magical goal but also provided two assists. “I lost sight of the puck. Then I saw Tim swing for a baseball swing and I wasn’t able to parry it,” said Detroit goalkeeper James Reimer.

The Senators had already led 4-0 in the middle of the second period before the Red Wings led by defender Moritz Seider scored four times within eight minutes and equalized. “It was a bit of a roller coaster ride. We gained the lead and then things went in the other direction, unlike what we had hoped for,” said Stützle. “In overtime we had the puck almost the whole time and it was a deserved win.” Regarding the direct duel with Seider, Stützle said: “Playing against Mo is always difficult, a super stable defender.”

“I hate watching baseball”

Stützle is having a very strong season with Ottawa so far. The striker collected 20 points scorer (four goals, 16 assists) in 14 games. After many years in which the preliminary round ended, the Senators could qualify for the play-offs again this season for the first time in six years.
