Leroy Sane Apologizes for Red Card Incident: “I Let The Team Down”

Leroy Sane spoke in the dressing room at the Ernst Happel Stadium directly after Julian Nagelsmann. After his fuses blew for a split second, Bayern Munich’s offensive player, who was so brilliant this Bundesliga season, apologized to his national team teammates.

“The game is on me, on me. I have to control myself. I let the team down,” said Sane after the first red card (49th) of his professional career in the 402nd game. He came to a self-assessment: “That’s not possible.”

The 27-year-old was tempted to attack Phillipp Mwene during the 0-2 (0-1) draw against Austria in Vienna. He hit the Mainz Bundesliga professional in the face or neck with both hands.

“It wasn’t anything personal against Phillipp,” he reported afterwards, calmly and crestfallen, but rather he had freaked out out of frustration with his own performance. “I’m just motivated, I want us to go in the right direction.”

Rudi Völler had only very limited understanding of this. “He apologized, that’s all well and good,” said the DFB sports director, “but you have to show your passion at the right moment.”

Nagelsmann spoke of a lack of cleverness. “The opponent tries to kick Leroy, but doesn’t hit him – and Leroy reacts, we get red. You can also provoke red from the opponent.” Sane, who cleared Mwene of any blame, now faces a ban of at least two games.
