Leighway Defeats Reigning Men’s Premier Champions Fitzimwarc in Tricky Opener

Reigning Men’s Premier champions Fitzimwarc kicked off their campaign with a tricky match away at Leighway, back in the league for the first time since 2019. Four of the nine rubbers went to three games in a competitive encounter which Leighway managed to edge with a 5-4 win. Bryn Gillard and Tom Crosby and Michael Clark and Craig Mack both won two rubbers each and were supported by one from Ahsan Rohman and Lijo V J to secure victory overall. Alan Adkins and Phil Tuffee picked up a brace for Fitz with Harris Foster-Carter and Zak Pryor and Paul Chaplin and Spencer Collins winning one each.

Elsewhere in the division, Westcliff beat newly promoted Phoenix Flames 9-0 to remain top of the table. Matt Allum and Adam Sibley, Lee Scott and James Allpress and Isaac Pearson and David Clark all won three rubbers each, with the former two pairings not dropping a game. Jay Clark and Danny Peach came closest to getting a rubber for the home side who remain bottom.

In the Combination Premier, Fitzwimarc continued their impressive start with a 6-0 win over Eastwood to make it two wins from two. Chloe Baker, Sarah Hall, Phil Tuffee and Paul Chaplin made up the winning team for Fitz, who didn’t a drop a game.

Westcliff’s perfect start in the Mixed Premier continued with a 9-0 victory against B & BP. Matt Allum and Jade Timms and Lee Scott and Philippa Pearson won three perfect rubbers and Adam Sibley and Clare Roberts also secured a hat-trick for the reigning champions. Adam Cooper and Tamsin Collinge came closest to grabbing a rubber for B & BP who sit in third.

Finally, in the Ladies division one, Phoenix Flames continued their near faultless start with a 6-0 win away at Hawkwell. Mandie Breed, Sara Thompson, Trudi Clark and Corinne Telling made up the winning side for the Flames. Caroline Trace and Jenny Howorth came closest to getting a point for the Hawks.
