Keegan Murray’s Defensive Assignment Success with the Sacramento Kings

Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray has received several special defensive assignments from the team’s coaching staff during the first weeks of the season. Among these tasks that have been assigned to him is trying to neutralize the rival team’s top offensive reference during long stretches of the matches. And he hasn’t been bad at all.

Kings coach Mike Brown praised Murray for his defensive work on Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell earlier in the week, hitting him at 20% in direct matchups. Two days later he named him defensive player of the game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I love it,” he said. ‘sophomore’ about receiving this responsibility in the defensive section. «When I was in college and even last year I wasn’t known as a defender, so I tried to figure it out on my own. I asked the coaches and they helped me, but it’s just about studying your opponents and being aggressive on defense. During the offseason I became more athletic and stronger, and that helped me a lot.

Murray’s offensive numbers are being discreet, mainly due to his low level of accuracy, just 38.7% on field goals. While he regains his spark, the player is knowing how to redirect his impact on the court to the defense, where, for the moment, he is performing at a good level and is facilitating greater balance for the Kings on both sides of the court.
