Karel Geraerts Lands New Coaching Role at Schalke 04 After Union SG Dismissal

Karel Geraerts was fired from Union SG after last season. He is now working for the German Schalke 04.

Schalke 04 is the new employer for Karel Geraerts, who was without work for four months after his dismissal from Union SG. But the German club was not the first to inquire. Geraerts rejected several clubs this summer.

“Clubs that were concrete? Six,” he tells Het Nieuwsblad. “I didn’t jump on the first project that came along. I wanted to have the good feeling and choose a club that suits me.”

The match with Schalke seemed to be perfect for Geraerts. “Schalke really wanted me, that also played a role. It didn’t stop me that the season was already underway here. I knew in advance that it would be a club that was having a hard time, because only those clubs fire their trainer.”

Belgian clubs also tried to convince Geraerts to become their trainer. Geraerts confirms that OH Leuven and KV Kortrijk knocked on his door this summer. “They have made inquiries before, but it was never really concrete.”
