Yuko Fujii is from Obu City, Aichi Prefecture. From the age of 5, he was trained at Oishi Dojo, which has produced the likes of Hidehiko Yoshida, who won the gold medal in the men’s 78kg class at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and Ayumi Tanimoto (the same generation as Yuko), who won two consecutive titles in the women’s 63kg class at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Through his training, he placed high in national competitions in middle school and high school. However, after that, she slumped. Yuko recalls her time as follows.

“I loved practicing hard and improving my skills, and was called a “practice bug.” However, eventually I couldn’t beat the top players of my age. I think they lacked the tenacity to compete. It was very frustrating to see him perform on the world stage.”

While continuing his career as an athlete, he graduated from Hiroshima University’s Faculty of Education and entered the same university’s graduate school “not to study, but to master judo,” but he was unable to achieve the results he expected. After completing graduate school, she retired from active duty at the age of 24. In 2007, she studied abroad at the University of Bath, west of London.

In 2010, she was selected as the technical coach for the British women’s national team, and helped Britain win a medal for the first time in 12 years at the 2012 London Olympics. Her teaching style, which is faithful to the basics and also considers the feelings of the athletes, caught the attention of Brazilian judo officials, and in May 2013, she was appointed as the technical coach of the Brazilian men’s and women’s national teams. She helped her student Rafaela Silva win gold in the women’s 57kg category at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
