Jordan Poole Struggles with Expectations and Attitude Amid Washington Wizards Rebuild

There weren’t many expectations placed on Washington for this season. The departure of Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis predicted a change of course that would be accompanied by many defeats, which is happening, as the Wizards occupy the second-to-last position in the Eastern Conference with a 2-9 record.

Beyond the poor results achieved, in the American capital they are beginning to be concerned about the performance of the player designated to take the reins: Jordan Poole. And we are not only talking about his poor decision-making in the shot or his desire to knead the ball excessively, but also about his attitude and certain reactions on the court.

The point guard left a moment of great controversy last Sunday, coinciding with his team’s defeat against the Brooklyn Nets. During a timeout, Poole did not pay due attention to the instructions of coach Wes Unseld Jr., until a teammate touched him on the shoulder to make him focus on the play marked by the coach.

Unseld Jr. was questioned this Wednesday about what happened, he acknowledged that he did not see the video and assured that he is not concerned about Poole’s level of commitment. «I think there are a thousand moments during a game. In some, the coaches talk to the players, and the players talk to other players,” said the Wizards coach, according to The Washington Post. “That happen. I think this moment [Poole] It is under great scrutiny. People are always looking for things. “I don’t know the exact sequence, but it’s not a big deal until it becomes a big deal.”

Poole became the frontrunner of a rebuilding franchise when the Wizards acquired him in a trade with Golden State this summer. This isn’t a role he’s used to after landing in the NBA as part of a veteran-filled champion team like the Warriors, and Unseld added that it has translated into extra attention from the fans who are monitoring your behavior.

Poole also dismissed concerns about the video, saying he understood Unseld’s play and that it was “a very normal timeout.” A month ago he declared that he felt totally liberated in his new team, although he is having a hard time embracing offensive efficiency and consistency: he averages 16.2 points, with a field goal success percentage of 40.1%.
