After the Niedersachsensenderby between Hanover and Braunschweig, Interior Minister Daniela Behrens was outraged by the violent atmosphere in the stadium.

The game in which 96 defeated their arch-rivals had to be interrupted several times on Sunday because pyrotechnics and fireworks were thrown onto the lawn. This has little to do with football, said Behrens. “The aggression that I perceive in the stadium also makes me really angry,” said the SPD Interior Minister.

According to their information, more than 2,000 emergency services were tied up by the Niedersachsensenderby. On the one hand, the high number is justified, said Behrens. On the other hand, police officers who were on duty around the derby actually had other, more important tasks to fulfill. Behrens appealed to the Bundesliga clubs to influence their fans – and indicated that the clubs could pay for the games in the future. “This high level of police deployment certainly cannot be achieved in the long term without us having to talk to the clubs about reimbursement of costs,” said Behrens.

In addition to horses and drones, the police also had a helicopter in use around the game. In the stadium, police officers from the guest block were pelted with objects, as the Hanover police said. Videos show Braunschweig supporters tearing out rows of seats in the stadium. According to previous information, there were no major incidents before the game. According to the federal police, the journey of around 1,500 fans from Braunschweig to Hanover on a special train was peaceful. There were also no incidents at Braunschweig main station.

The police union (GdP) in Lower Saxony had previously spoken of a challenging weekend. The matchday was unfortunate for them, as Werder Bremen fans were also expected at Hanover main station on Sunday. Well over 1,000 fans of the Bundesliga club had to change trains here on the way to the away game in Wolfsburg. In addition, due to the current political situation in the Middle East, there are now many demonstrations on the weekends. This means that the police are increasingly challenged on the weekends, explains a spokesman for the GdP.
