Instituto Falls to Titanes de Barranquilla in South American League Showdown

Instituto could not repeat its good performance from its last games and this Wednesday it fell to Titanes de Barranquilla, for the Super 6 of the South American League that is played in Montevideo, Uruguay. The coffee growers showed their superiority as the minutes passed and took the game 87-82, in addition to qualifying for the semifinals. The tremendous red-and-white reaction (they raised a deficit of 17) was not enough, although it was very close and in a hot finale.

Gloria still has a chance to get among the four best that will define the title this weekend, but to do so they will have to beat the local Peñarol this Thursday, in a duel that will be played at the Uruguayans’ home from 9:30 p.m. Whoever wins this match will be the last one to qualify for the semifinals. The people from Córdoba have this possibility, thanks to the fact that on Tuesday they beat Gimnasia de Comodoro Rivadavia 81-68.

The match against Titantes

The game was not easy for Instituto. The Colombians came to this stage undefeated, after winning their group in the qualifying phase. And Titans showed why. With a good part of the national team from that country, the coffee growers showed their abilities, with a fast-paced, fluid game and great defensive work.

It was difficult for Gloria to find a way back into the game. And he escaped to 14 (64-50) at the end of the third quarter, coagulating any attempt at a reaction by the Cordobans.

The passing of the minutes showed how the coffee team was gaining confidence and how the Alta Córdoba team became clouded and frustrated.

Titanes lived off the income they managed to get (it reached 17), although they suffered from Instituto’s reaction in the last quarter. With 1m29 left, Hoover scored a triple that tied the score at 81. But a referee whistled a foul on Vildoza’s attack, which annulled the action. At the end of the match, Lucas Victoriano, Gloria’s coach, was expelled for protesting.

Hoover was the best in Instituto, with 21 points (4/6 in doubles and 3/5 in triples) and the Uruguayan Pomoli also stood out, with 17 points. But Gloria lost in several important areas. The Colombians dominated in rebounds (48 to 36) and assists (23 to 13).
