In the Baltic Cup in downhill skiing in Lithuania, mistakes in slalom change some winners for young people

At the Baltic Cup Alpine Skiing organized by the Latvian Ski Federation in the winter sports hall “Snow Arena” in the southern city of Druskininkos, Lithuania, some winners in the slalom in the youth groups changed because the leaders made mistakes, but in most groups, including the Master, the super slalom winners repeated their success in the slalom as well. .

On Friday, with the start of the new season’s popular Baltic Cup in super slalom, three groups of youth and Master mountain skiers started, with the representatives of all three Baltic countries winning. On the National Day on November 18, in the second discipline in the slalom for young people and in the Master group, mountain skiers from the three Baltic States again won the first places, but Latvians celebrated the most victories.

In the U16 group, this time, unfortunately, there were no Latvian alpine skiers in the first three. Super slalom runner-up Erik Bergstrom was fastest in both races and celebrated victory as the only podium finisher on both days. In a very similar Lithuanian duel, Dainius Kiškis was 0.1 seconds behind Gintarus Strumpf for the second place. With the second time in the second race, NilsNeo Trapāns came close to the top three and took 4th place, while Mikas Abzalon, who won 3rd place in the super slalom on Friday, this time took 5th place.

For the girls, unlike the boys, who made it into the top three in this group on the first day, the same thing was repeated today, but with one interesting feature. Elza Zelča was again convincingly first, Esther Janosne took second place, and Justine Baumane achieved the third result. In this sense, the trio looked identical to the super slalom, but they were joined by another in the slalom trio and four participants climbed onto the podium. What didn’t happen in the first one, when she missed the podium by one tenth of a second and had to settle for 4th place, then in the slalom, Annija Biezā “squeezed” into the top three, showing the second time in the second run and sharing the 3rd place with Baumani in the sum of two runs with the same time.

In the U14 group, the boys again had tight results and again two Estonians and one Latvian were in the top three, but this time not only the double victory of Estonia was disrupted in our favor, but also the winning country changed. Although Laurits Lauks was relatively confidently in the lead after the first race, in the end the Estonian had to settle for third place, as he was fourth in the second race. However, his compatriot Andre Sarri did exactly the opposite, that is, with the fastest time in the second race, he rose from fifth place to second, thus taking 2nd place for the second day in a row and being the only one who managed to be among the top three on both days. However, Patriks Ciaguns, who showed a more stable performance, got the victory in the end with the third and second times. Meanwhile, Edvards Kapteinis-Veits, the top-ranked athlete, with the same places in the races as Ciagun, only in the reverse order – second and third, ended up out of the top three in 4th place. In the first race, the super slalom winner Aron Neme retired and the third place winner Kristians Indriksons did not finish after mistakes in the first race.

In the girls’ U14 group, the Lithuanian Liepa Cekanavičute won again, but this time there were two other Latvians behind her in the top three, as yesterday’s second and third place winners Daniela Anna Livčanae and Nicolae Grīnberga unfortunately did not succeed in the second race after the Top3 times on the first track, leaving both of them without a credited result. In a very intense duel for the second place, Emilija Kliesta was 0.04 seconds ahead of Noa Aleksandra Trapani, who, unlike her brother, managed to enter the top three on the second track with the second time.

In the U12 group for boys, as in the U14 group, two others made it into the top three and the second place winner remained unchanged. A convincing victory for Noel Dorsch in the slalom. For the second day in a row, Leonard Egle was second, only this time very stable. Martin Kürberg secured third place for Estonia. Leo Žermanis, who dominated the Super Slalom, did not finish in the first race, as did yesterday’s third place winner Dāvis Winkler. For the girls, yesterday’s winner Maija Ciagune posted the best time after the first run, but a mistake on the second track prevented Maia from earning a second win, leaving her without a result. As a result, the winner of the second place in the super slalom, Chantala Smolenakova from Slovakia, had a chance to win, but the Slovakian had to take second place again, because she did not do so well on the second course, and also the winner of the third place in the super slalom, Laura Amerika, overtook Smolenakova in the second run. The trio was completed by Ramune, the younger sister of the U14 group winner Liepa Čekanavichutes.

Latvian alpine skiers once again had a good start in the men’s master group, although they did not manage to occupy the entire podium this time. Tom Ilejs, who won the super slalom, repeated his success in the slalom, winning with a huge margin of 7 seconds. What failed yesterday for Janulionis, today Arūns Čiukši managed to win the second place. For the second day in a row, together with Ileja, Andrejs Mihailovs, who took third place, climbed the podium. Edgars Kupčs showed with the second time in the first race that he is still one of the contenders for awards. On the other hand, Pauls Stēga, one of the favorites, retired on the first track. For women, all the awarded places were again earned by the home team, ranking again in the same order – Rūta Paražinskiene, Monika Lajute and Daiva Norvaišaite.
