FC Nantes, 11th in the French championship standings (Ligue 1), announced on Wednesday the appointment of Jocelyn Gourvennec as coach, replacing Pierre Aristouy, whose sidelining had been announced in the morning.

Former playmaker for Lorient, Rennes and Marseille, Gourvennec had also worn the yellow and green jersey for three seasons (1995-1998), playing with Nantes in a Champions League semi-final, against the future winner, Juventus Turin ( 0-2, 3-2).

Having moved to the bench in 2008, two years after his professional retirement, he cut his teeth at La Roche-sur-Yon, before taking charge of Guingamp, in National (D3) in 2010.

In six seasons at En-Avant, he brought the Breton club back to the elite and won a French Cup in 2014, before reaching the round of 16 of the Europa League the following season.

He then coached Bordeaux and Lille, interspersed with a new stint at Guingamp, but with a more mixed record.

Gourvennec arrives at FC Nantes which has been very irregular since the start of the season and which remains on three defeats and a draw in the league. On Wednesday morning, Nantes announced the sidelining of Pierre Aristouy and his staff, with immediate effect.

Former coach of the U19s and the Nantes reserves, Aristouy, 43, took the reins of the team four days before the end of last season, saving the club’s place in the elite.
