Police have arrested a suspect following the death of a professional ice hockey player during a game in Great Britain. It is unclear whether this was the player who inflicted the fatal wound on the deceased. The DEL reacts to the incident with a mandatory rule.

The death of Adam Johnson still shocked the ice hockey world three weeks after the tragic accident. The Nottingham Panthers player had an unfortunate collision with his opponent Matt Petgrave from the Sheffield Steelers during a check. The blade of Petgrave’s skate hit Johnson in the neck, causing a deep wound. The 29-year-old had to be resuscitated on the ice, but later died in a hospital.

The police began investigations after the accident and have now arrested a suspect. An official statement states that an investigation is being carried out on suspicion of manslaughter. However, the authorities in South Yorkshire did not disclose the identity of the person arrested. This leaves it unclear whether the person arrested was 31-year-old Petgrave.

“Our investigation began immediately following this tragedy and we have conducted extensive investigations to reconstruct the events that led to Adam’s death in these unprecedented circumstances,” the statement said.

Neck protection is mandatory in the DEL

Petgrave has been met with a wave of hate on social media since the accident. He no longer played for his team. On Sunday, the Steelers played in their own hall for the first time after the death drama. When Petgrave’s picture was shown on the video cube in the second third, they applauded and encouraged him. “A poignant moment in the 22nd minute as Matt Petgrave received applause from over 8,000 fans to remind him of our love and support,” the Steelers wrote.

The German Ice Hockey League (DEL) has reacted to the tragic accident and made wearing neck protection mandatory for all players from January 1st. The Adler Mannheim have already anticipated this and introduced neck protection for their professionals. “You know what can happen with these very sharp skates. It’s such a small thing that can protect our players. We don’t want to experience something like that again in ice hockey,” said Adler manager Jan-Axel Alavaara on SWR.
