Welshman Geraint Thomas, second in the last Giro d’Italia, is enjoying a well-deserved rest after an expensive season. The 37-year-old told the Times about his break: “Everyone invites me to drink”

He has just closed yet another season of his very long career, given that he has been competing in cycling since 2004. Geraint Thomas is 37 years old and in this year he was leading the Giro d’Italia for a long time, only to then finish it in second place behind Roglic. Now the Welshman is enjoying a well-deserved holiday, without depriving himself of anything according to what he said in a long interview with the Times: «In the last two weeks I think I’ve gotten drunk 12 nights out of 14 – his words – since I returned to Cardiff it was pure continuous madness because every day I meet a friend who asks me: “Hey, do you want to meet up?” and I reply: “Yes, let’s go to dinner or to the pub” and we always end up talking over a nice beer.”

The Ineos champion, with whom he recently renewed his contract, never goes astray when the calendar is full of races and big events, is among the most professional on the circuit, which also explains his longevity: «During the season I don’t drink never – he continued – perhaps just a drink on really important occasions. But during the break it’s right to let go. At the beginning I had a really low tolerance for alcohol, but now I feel I have improved from that point of view too.”

Such a long career is partly due to the carefree way with which Thomas faces the break that divides one season from another: «Living a few weeks freely is what I need to recover. Also because now, after a few weeks like this, I stop and think: “Hey Geraint, it’s time to get back on the bike and get back into proper shape”. Everything has changed in recent years, it has been difficult to change my mentality and adapt to new things. ».
