There was victory and defeat for Austria’s volleyball representatives on Wednesday evening in the first leg of the sixteenth finals of the men’s CEV Cup. Masters Hypo Tirol brought Fenerbahce Istanbul to its knees in a thriller in the USI Hall thanks to 24 points from top scorer Luan Weber with 3:2 (23, -15, 20, -23, 19). Runner-up Aich/Dob, however, lost out in Greece at AONS Milon Nea Smyrni Athens with 0:3 (-24, -17, -22). The second leg follows next Wednesday.
In the round of 16 of the Challenge Cup, UVC Ried lost to Steaua Bucharest 1:3 (-18, -13, 19, -16). ÖVV national team libero Philipp Kroiss played through for the Romanian runner-up. Here too, the decision will be made in the second leg in a week.
