Wildcard Pierre Hugues Herbert and top seed Luca Van Assche will face each other on Thursday in the quarter-finals of the Moselle Open. Luca Van Assche qualified for this round at the expense of Stan Wawrinka, who was forced to retire during their second round clash. The match ended at the end of the second set which Van Assche won in a tiebreak. This is the 32nd victory of the season for the Frenchman, who continues his rise on hard indoor courts. Van Assche won 13 of his 19 matches on indoor hard courts, giving him a challenger title on that surface. He moved up four places and is now 66th in the ATP rankings. Pierre Hugues Herbert is also in excellent form on indoor hard surfaces. He beat Gijs Brouwer in straight sets in the final round to claim his 14th victory on this surface. Herbert, who has yet to lose a set in this tournament, has won 20 times in 2023. The former world number 36 hopes he can get the upper hand on his young compatriot. Herbert is participating in the Metz tournament for the eleventh time, but only now has he qualified for the round of 16. His journey up to this round allowed him to gain 57 places and rise to 287th place in the rankings. The winner will face Karen Khachanov or Alexander Shevchenko for a place in the final.
