Hannover 96 wins derby against Eintracht Braunschweig

Hannover 96 further exacerbated Eintracht Braunschweig’s sporting crisis with a comfortable win in the Lower Saxony derby. Thanks to the 2-0 (2-0) win on Sunday, coach Stefan Leitl’s team remained third in the table, within reach of the direct promotion places in the 2nd Bundesliga, while their long-term rivals are still in last place in the table with five points after twelve match days. Fabian Kunze (12th minute) and Marcel Halstenberg (42nd) scored from the penalty spot for the hosts in front of a heated crowd.

Hannover remained in control throughout the game. After around 55 minutes, Eintracht midfielder Jannis Nikolaou also received a yellow-red card for a hard tackle on Enzo Leopold. Even the Braunschweig team, who were outnumbered, had no chance to score throughout the game. Substitute attacker Nicolo Tresoldi (88th) scored another goal, but it was canceled due to offside.

Because of the use of pyrotechnics and the resulting thick clouds of smoke, the game, which is considered one of the most explosive derbies in Germany, kicked off about five minutes later. During the course of the game, referee Sascha Stegemann interrupted the game twice more because Eintracht supporters threw red flares and firecrackers towards the field. Eintracht fans also dismantled some rows of seats and threw them from the upper tier to the lower tier.

No goals between Rostock and Berlin

Hertha BSC had to let up in the fight to reach the promotion ranks. At Hansa Rostock, coach Pal Dardai’s team couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw on Sunday despite aluminum hits. Although the Berliners are undefeated in three competitive games in a row, the Bundesliga relegated team remains in the second half of the table. For Rostock it was an important point gain in the relegation battle after Hansa had recently lost three league games in a row. In general, Rostock, who are only three points behind Hertha with 13 points, had only won one of the previous seven games.

In the Ostseestadion, Hertha had the upper hand in the first half, but the attacking duo Fabian Reese/Haris Tabakovic couldn’t really get together. Chances to score were in short supply because the guests, with Marton Dardai and Linus Gechter replacing the suspended central defenders Toni Leistner and Marc-Oliver Kempf, defended Rostock’s efforts well.

After the break, the Berliners came out of the locker room with momentum – and were unlucky twice. First Pascal Klemens (52nd) hit the post with a low shot from 20 meters before Reese (62nd) headed a Dardai corner onto the crossbar. Hertha now became more compelling. After a great assist from Smail Prevljak, Jonjoe Kenny (64′) was denied by Hansa goalkeeper Markus Kolke. Hertha were lucky when Rostock got stronger in the final phase and Klemens cleared the ball against Juan Jose Perea (77′).

After a defeat against SC Paderborn, Karlsruher SC fell back into the relegation zone and is therefore continuing to lose ground. Coach Christian Eichner’s team lost 0:3 (0:1) at home on Sunday. Thanks to the threesome, the Paderborn team is closing in on five teams in the middle of the table, all of which have 18 points. The goals from Adriano Grimaldi (17th) and Felix Platte (71st/85th) made the difference.

In front of 23,705 spectators, the Karlsruhe team didn’t get into the game at all. Niclas Nadj could have given SCP the lead after 14 minutes. Grimaldo did better, benefiting from two mistakes by the KSC defense. Despite the weak opening phase, the KSC had opportunities to equalize before the break due to once again poor pitch conditions. Lars Stindl and Igor Matanovic missed this.

The North Baden team came out of the locker room somewhat improved. The pressure from the hosts increased, but Paderborn’s defense held up against it. The guests occasionally made relief attacks, two of which completed the plate. In the end, there wasn’t enough from KSC to avert their sixth defeat of the season.
