Hamburg SV’s Narrow 2-1 Win Over Braunschweig Sets Stage for City Derby

The series holds, at least that. HSV also won its seventh home game of the season and caught up with leaders St. Pauli, at least for one night. However, the meager 2:1 (2:0) against Braunschweig did not serve as encouragement before the city derby. Instead, coach Tim Walter’s professionals narrowly avoided embarrassment. Annoying: Bakery Jatta received his fifth yellow card shortly before the end and will miss the game against St. Pauli.

In the end, of course, the relief that they had somehow made it prevailed. But this time the cheering on the lawn and in the stands only lasted for a short time. Instead, many of the 55,879 fans were left wondering what to do with what they had just been offered.

The fortress holds. HSV last managed seven home wins to start a season in 1986/87. And yet: The way HSV faltered against perhaps the worst team in the league is cause for concern. We’ll have to step it up a notch next Friday at the city duel at Millerntor.

Two strong minutes are enough for HSV to take a 2-0 lead against Braunschweig

Strictly speaking, two strong minutes were enough for HSV to win the game. Glatzel (18th) and Muheim (25th) missed good opportunities, but then came the double that ultimately decided the game. First, Ramos headed in a Dompé cross to take the lead (25′), a few seconds later Pherai scored dryly with a low shot to make it 2-0 (26′).

The drops had already been sucked. At least that’s what everyone thought, and perhaps HSV too, who rested on their lead instead of continuing to play decisively forward. The result: Kaufmann shortened the score for the previously shockingly weak guests (62′).

Braunschweig offside: HSV in VAR luck

From Hamburg’s perspective, things could have been much worse. After Kaufmann had scored again to make it 2-2 (74′), the ball was already back on the kick-off point before the VAR penalized an offside position. The goal was conceded, lucky for HSV!
Still, it was bitter. Jatta was shown yellow for his foul on Rittmüller (88th) and was missing from the city duel. A big loss for Walter’s team.

After Königsdörffer and Glatzel (90th + 6) left the score 3-1, it was over. A slim victory, but the hard core of the fans shook for a moment and then knew what was needed: “Shit St. Pauli” and “Derby victory” they chanted. Next Friday, the sporting supremacy in the city will be at stake.
