GWM will take away the fear of hybrids – El Sol de México

GWM (Great Wall Motor) sees the Mexican market as having great potential for the development and marketing of electric and hybrid cars, since in the last five years, Asian brands have had a relevant participation.

For Pedro Albarrán, vice president and general director of GWM Mexico, the main challenge in the hybrid and electric car industry is to remove users’ fear that they may be left halfway if they purchase a car of this type. He believes that this fear is due to the fact that there is not enough infrastructure or incentives to know the benefits of these units.

“When we analyze the Mexican market, what we observe is that customers are still worried about how far the cars will move and how likely they are to get stuck in traffic. We must improve confidence about this,” he told El Sol de México.

To do this, he explained that GWM plans to establish charging stations and put chargers in the 70 agencies that are looking to open in the country. However, this will not be enough, since they also require the federal government to generate incentives for consumers to purchase these units and create greater infrastructure.

Albarrán commented that GWM will attract customers with prices that compete with cars that use gasoline.

“We are setting prices for hybrid products at the cost of a unit that consumes gasoline. We believe that this will make a change in people’s mentality because they will be able to have products equipped with safe, sustainable and affordable energy,” he said.

The manager referred to the Haval H6 HEV model, a hybrid car that in its premium version costs around 639 thousand pesos and in its luxury version 689 thousand pesos, a price that according to Albarrán, competes with traditional cars.

“We felt that that part of the market was not served, so we are working in teams with elegant and well-equipped designs that are environmentally responsible.”

He indicated that Mexico is an attractive country due to the commercial openness it represents in the world, especially in the North American area. “Mexico is an open market in which you can import and export from and to many countries. There is a great structure of spare parts and it is a great opportunity to think about creating a base for all of Latin America.”

According to Inegi data, at the end of July, 4,746 hybrid units and 952 electric cars were sold.
